Suppressors have long the subject of regulation at both the federal and state level. But if two major bills currently being considered — House Resolution 1 in Congress and Ohio Senate Bill 214 — gain approval, Ohioans could soon experience a dramatically different legal landscape when it comes to owning and using suppressors.

Let’s break down what these bills could mean for responsible gun owners such as you and the customers of AimHi Family Firearms Center.

H.R. 1 at the Federal Level

H.R. 1, dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” includes Sec. 112029, a federal change to how suppressors are treated under U.S. law.

  • Removes suppressors from the National Firearms Act
  • Eliminates the $200 tax stamp

The U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1 in May. With federal lawmakers eyeing a July 4 target date for Senate approval, H.R. 1, if passed, would treat suppressors like standard firearms under federal law, easing the purchase and ownership process.

Ohio Senate Bill 214

Meanwhile, back home in the Buckeye State, Senate Bill 214 is aiming to declassify suppressors as “dangerous ordnance” under Ohio law.

If passed, SB 214 would:

  • Remove suppressors from the “dangerous ordnance” category, the same classification reserved for bombs, grenades and automatic weapons
  • Eliminate felony charges under state dangerous ordnance laws for owners who comply with federal law

If passed, SB 214, now on its second hearing in the Armed Services, Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee, would make sure Ohioans who follow federal suppressor laws are protected from outdated state-level charges and allowed to hunt using suppressors legally.

What Could Change for Ohio Gun Owners?

If both H.R. 1 and SB 214 pass, Ohioans could soon:

  • Buy suppressors more easily, with fewer legal hoops
  • Avoid the $200 federal tax stamp
  • No longer worry about being charged with a felony under outdated “dangerous ordnance” definitions.

This is a significant shift that would align Ohio law with common-sense national reforms, reduce barriers to safe suppressor ownership and increase firearm hearing safety for all shooters.
