At AimHi Family Firearms Center, we’re enthusiasts ourselves and understand the excitement and practicality of customizing your firearms.

However, it’s essential to know which modifications are legally permissible to ensure you stay within Ohio’s regulations. Let’s review a few of the possible modifications and how AimHi can help you navigate these waters with our in-house services offered by Master Gunsmith Kevin Wardle of Custom Ordnance Gunsmithing.

Understanding Ohio’s Firearm Modification Laws

In Ohio, firearm modifications are generally permissible as long as they don’t make the firearm illegal under state or federal law. This includes regulations against fully automatic weapons and certain types of suppressors and explosives (check out our past blog on obtaining National Firearms Act items here). Ohio follows federal guidelines closely, meaning any modification that does not create a “machine gun” as defined by the NFA is typically acceptable.

Trigger Modifications

One of the most common enhancements involves trigger systems. Replacing a standard trigger with a lighter, adjustable trigger can improve accuracy and response. This is perfectly legal in Ohio, providing the modification does not alter the firearm to fire more than one round per trigger pull, which would classify it as a machine gun.

Cosmetic Changes

Cosmetic modifications, including Cerakote finishes and engravings, are legal and popular for personalizing firearms. These modifications don’t affect functionality of the gun but can make the firearm distinctly yours.

Sights & Barrels

Sights and scopes, from simple iron sights to advanced optical scopes, are permissible and widely used among Ohio hunters and target shooters to improve aiming precision. Similarly, changing barrels is also allowed as long as the barrel length complies with federal regulations (for instance, a minimum of 16 inches for rifles to avoid classification as short-barreled rifle under the NFA unless properly registered).

Compliance & Safety First

While modifying your firearm can be a rewarding project, all changes should prioritize safety and compliance with the law. It’s important to familiarize yourself with the specifics of Ohio law and consult professionals if you’re uncertain about the legality of a modification.
